There are a lot of different software packages that will help an organization with the technical aspects of developing a budget.  However, there are no software products that will help an organization with understanding their business well enough to develop a budget or that will help an organization manage to their budget.

What Are The Components Of A Budget?

A budget is comprised of the key metrics that are the critical indicators of the success of a business. With few exceptions, at a minimum, a budget includes revenue (or money received) , expenses and headcount. They may also include indicators that are specific to a particular organization such as revenue per student at a university or cost per transaction in a service industry.

Why Budget?

A budget helps an organization measure their success or failure, it can also help an organization understand why they are succeeding or failing.  Generally an organization creates a budget, then develops a forecast based off actual results.  If revenue is coming in lower than the budget a forecast will have to include either lower expenses or a plan to make up the lost revenue later in the year if an organization is going to meet their budget.
